Louis Abel-aTruchet was a French Post impressionist painter best known for his depictions of the Parisian Belle Époque.
Having studied at the academy Julianne Truchet went on to have numerous exhibitions in Paris and regularly submitted works to the Salons including the Salon d’Automne and the Salon de la Societe Nationals des Beaux-Arts.
A well-known figure around Montmartre Truchet painted in various mediums and also produced satirical political works. At the age of 57 he enrolled in the army and died in 1918 towards the end of the War.
This work of Venice is one of a number of paintings he completed on his travels. After Paris Venice was one of hisfavourite subjects, this work painted with exagerated primary colour similar to the Fauvist group hints at a hightened state of mind and many of his depictions of this watery city have this same sense of jubilation.
